Medical Science Liaison, Mid-Atlantic – East North Carolina and Virginia

As a Medical Science Liaison for ViiV Healthcare, Krista builds on her solid background in clinical pharmacy, infectious diseases, and HIV. Her passion for HIV stems from her keen interest in global communicable diseases as well as from caring for patients negatively affected by HIV stigma. Krista’s experience has shaped her advocacy for the crucial role of pharmacists in educating healthcare providers about medication- related issues. Understanding that HIV differs from other disease states because it requires medication for lifelong suppression, she recognizes pharmacists as uniquely positioned to assist providers and patients in navigating the use of HIV medications. Determined to help expand the reach of HIV education to a wide and diverse array of healthcare providers, Krista is thrilled to be part of ViiV’s dedication to advancing HIV education and care.

Current role: Krista joined ViiV in Spring 2021 as a Medical Science Liaison for the Mid-Atlantic/East North Carolina and Virginia region. Her responsibilities include serving as regional medication expert on ViiV Healthcare products, and interacting with investigators to help ensure successful completion of ViiV- sponsored and investigator-sponsored clinical trials. She also works with the ViiV commercial team to provide educational programming to healthcare providers.

Experience: Before joining ViiV, Krista most recently was an HIV Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner for over two years at the University of North Carolina (UNC) Infectious Disease Clinic. This multidisciplinary ambulatory care clinic is based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and provides care to thousands of patients state-wide. Krista’s responsibilities included medication counseling of treatment-experienced and treatment-naïve HIV patients, and developing recommendations for medication alterations based on drug interactions, co infection, viral resistance, and primary care disease state management. In addition, she served as preceptor for students on HIV/infectious disease rotation, and assisted in researching a patient-driven tobacco treatment program for people living with HIV. Previous to her employment at UNC, Krista was an Infectious Disease Clinical Pharmacist at the WG (Bill) Hefner Veterans Administration (VA) Medical Center in Salisbury, North Carolina, where she was responsible for the pharmacologic management of veterans living with HIV and hepatitis C in Charlotte and at two other VA sites. Her care made a difference to the more than 300 HIV-positive veterans and more than 1100 hepatitis C-positive veterans with whom she interacted.

In support of her research and education interests, Krista has presented multiple HIV and infectious disease educational/research programs at conferences and institutions, educating diverse audiences including patients, providers, and healthcare professionals. Most recently, she provided HIV antiviral adherence education to HIV case managers on behalf of the North Carolina AIDS Education and Training Center Program (AETC-Southeast).

Education: Krista received a PharmD in 2015 and a BS in Biomedical Science in 2011, both from the University of South Florida in Tampa. She completed her PGY1 Pharmacy Residency in 2016 at Xavier University of Louisiana College of Pharmacy/University Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, and her PGY2 HIV Ambulatory Care Residency in 2017 at the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy, University of Oklahoma Infectious Disease Institute in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Personal Interests: A native of Dominica, Krista grew up in Florida and currently lives in Mebane, North Carolina. In her free time, Krista enjoys reading and spending time with her family and husband—who was also her high-school sweetheart!
